Groundwater resources can be altered by the impact of human activity, but also by natural imbalances caused, for example, by catastrophic events or changes in climatic conditions. The development and rational management of these resources requires knowledge of the nature of the forcings, both natural and anthropogenic, and of the processes involved in transfers and biogeochemical reactions at the level of the atmosphere-soil-groundwater transfer continuum.

The acquisition of this knowledge is structured around four areas:

1. The role of land use - quantitative analysis of the territory
2. Impact of the unsaturated zone on water recharge and quality
3. How aquifers work
4. Modelling

Presentation of the course : The HSE Master's degree is organised around a core curriculum common to the different types of Master's degree in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Technology and specialised courses in water and soil sciences.

Semester 1 is 80 % and is common to all three STAAE specialisations. Students acquire the main fundamental concepts relating to interactions between water, minerals and living organisms. Teaching focuses on (i) water and soil quality (microbiology, toxicology, protection of aquatic ecosystems), (ii) exchanges and transfers between the various environmental compartments (water physics, theoretical study of transfers, plant and environmental agronomy) and (iii) anthropogenic impacts on resources (catchment basins: protection and resources). The presentation and application of methodological tools commonly used in the environmental sciences are also covered (bibliographical research, experimental approach, applied statistics, scientific English).

Presentation of the course : Semester 2 is differentiated according to the pathway. For the HSE pathway, it explores the major disciplinary fields of soil and water sciences and their links with the environment. The first block of lessons concerns hydrogeological systems. It introduces the methodologies used to study groundwater and surface water and the problems of resource management (quality/quantity). It includes a week-long field school designed to illustrate the link between geology and groundwater and to familiarise students with the tools used to investigate hydrogeological systems. A second group of lessons relates more specifically to data processing and analysis in hydrogeosciences (geostatistics/chronostatistics, numerical methods and modelling, GIS). Semester 2 concludes with a compulsory 8 to 12 week work placement.

Presentation of the course : The HSE Master's degree is organised around a core curriculum common to the different types of Master's degree in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Technology and specialised courses in water and soil sciences.

Semester 3 is differentiated according to the type of course. For the HSE pathway, the teaching develops the analysis of complex hydrosystems and deals with concrete cases in the form of projects. The teaching is divided into 3 blocks of disciplines: hydrogeological systems (knowledge, measurements and modelling of complex hydrosystems), water and soil protection (transfer of pollutants in porous media, knowledge of pollutants, methods of action in the event of pollution), water and territory (knowledge and representation of the heterogeneity of the territory, spatialisation of flows).
This semester also includes two field schools. The first is organised in Evian in collaboration with Danone Environnement and the Water Institute by Evian. Combining visits, lectures and field work, this course gives students the opportunity to discover the whole process of exploiting an aquifer, from the study of recharge conditions in the impluvium to commercial production, including protection measures and hygiene procedures. The second practical school is organised around one of the topics covered by our UMR, "methods of recharging aquifers in a man-made environment". During a week of alternating fieldwork, data analysis and modelling, we offer students one workshop a day to study the various processes involved in the surface/soil/groundwater continuum. This work is prepared, monitored and organised in coordination with INRAE colleagues from UMR EMMAH, who provide expertise, data and additional experimental equipment.
Teaching on the regulatory framework in the field of the environment is also provided during this semester. It is given in the form of lectures by external speakers only (consultancy firms, professional associations, government departments).

Presentation of the course : Semester 4 is dedicated to the end-of-study work placement. Prior to this, a preparatory course is offered in engineering and research in the water sciences (setting up and running a project, invitations to tender, public contracts, mock job interviews). The work placement can take place in a professional environment or in a research laboratory. It lasts between 20 and 32 weeks.
